Pregnancy for most couples is both a happy and stressful time. Some may have concerns regarding potential problems antenatally and during labour and the birth of a healthy baby.
We are fortunate in Australia to have an excellent public health care system in which women are referred to normal pregnancy or to high risk pregnancy clinics depending on their risks.
I have worked within the public system for more than 30 years and I know the system works.
Unfortunately cost of living pressures has resulted in fewer couples taking out private health insurance and an increasing number of women are receiving public obstetric care in a system which has been under significant pressure. In view of increasing demands many women are receiving midwife care only with minimal assessment from an obstetrician.
Risk factors may exist in a pregnancy but a pregnancy can only be retrospectively deemed as uncomplicated if no problems occurred. It is clearly important to identify risks and take measures to prevent complications instead of treating them when they develop.
Adding to the complexity of your decision to seek public or private care is the fact that patients without any obvious risk factors can still develop unexpected complications.
It could be argued that all pregnant women should be treated as potential high risk pregnancies.
I believe that meeting your obstetrician to discuss questions or concerns is important. For a long time I have offered a free “meet and greet” consultation which could help you make your decision.
